Although John Mayall doesn’t refer to himself as the “Godfather of British blues,” many fans and pundits do — and with good reason. Along with his band, The Bluesbreakers, John started out in the late 1950s in England, using Chicago blues as a starting point for a sound that evolved from album to album. And in an avuncular way, John Mayall harnessed and launched a “who’s who” list of former Bluesbreakers onto the music scene in the ’60 and ‘70s. Iconic names of past members include Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, and Mick Taylor, (who went on to a five -year stint with the Stones.) The studio album entitled ‘John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers', recorded with Clapton, was released in 1966 and is widely considered to be one of the great classic blues albums of all time, on either side of the Atlantic.

In recent years, Mayall released several live recordings on his own online label, Private Stash Records. But back in October 2008, the years of heavy touring were beginning to take their toll on John and he reluctantly announced his decision to take an indefinite break and permanently retire the name "Bluesbreakers." This caused quite a stir in blues circles and led to rumours about total retirement. Happily for John's fans, early in 2009 Eagle Records called upon John to come up with a new album. Feeling much revived after months away from music, he put together a new band for the project and a terrific album entitled 'Tough' was recorded.

As 2013 came to a close and with his 80th birthday mere weeks away, John Mayall entered a North Hollywood Studio with his band and special guest C.J. Chenier. He walked out with one of the finest and most personal records of his career, 'A Special Life'. The album is scheduled for release in 2014 on Forty Below Records with extensive tours of North America, Europe and the UK all set to commemorate John's 80th Birthday Celebration Tour, including a much anticipated stop at the RBC Bluesfest in Ottawa.
