Think reggae is exclusively the purview of Rastafarians? Think again. All six members of Long Shen Dao, a stellar ensemble from Beijing, China have earned solo success across various genres. But, in their Northern American debut, they come together to embrace the reggae spirit in a distinctly vibrant way that draws together East and West.

Long Shen Dao’s lead singer compares reggae music to a warm breeze -- accessible to everyone no matter his or her origins. Lyrically, the band is fond of references to love and spiritual freedom, including aspects of Taoism. Musically, while its core source is reggae, the group finds inspiration in contemporary urban sounds like rock, dub, hip-hop, world music, ska, and electronica. Long Shen Dao also incorporates traditional Chinese instruments like the guzheng (zither). But rather than playing an exotic part that attempts to the making of "reggae with Chinese characteristics" the guzheng functions no differently here than the guitar in any Western rock band, resulting in great sounds from a terrific band!
